2025-2026 Reflections

From Our Board Chair

Dear Stakeholders, Supporters, and Community Members,

As I prepare my final message as Board Chair of the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton (SACE), I am filled with gratitude, pride, and optimism for the future of this remarkable organization.

Over the past year, SACE has continued to demonstrate its unwavering commitment to supporting survivors of sexual violence, advancing prevention education, and advocating for meaningful systemic change. Through the dedication of our staff, volunteers, leadership team, and community partners, SACE has remained a trusted source of support and a powerful voice for those affected by sexual violence.

This year also marked a significant milestone in the history of SACE. After more than a decade of extraordinary leadership as Chief Executive Officer, Mary Jane James retired on December 31, 2025. Mary Jane’s impact on SACE and our community cannot be overstated. Her vision, compassion, and steadfast advocacy strengthened SACE, expanded our reach, and ensured that survivor-centred care remained at the heart of everything we do. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I extend our deepest appreciation for her years of dedicated service and her lasting legacy.

Looking to the future, we were excited to welcome Rachel Grehan and Lena Betker as Co-Chief Executive Officers, effective January 1, 2026. Their complementary leadership strengths, deep commitment to the SACE mission, and shared vision for innovation and impact position SACE well for its next chapter. The Board has every confidence in their ability to guide SACE forward while building upon the strong foundation established by those who came before them.

As I conclude my term as Board Chair, I want to thank my fellow Board members for their dedication and governance leadership, our staff and volunteers for their tireless efforts, our donors and supporters for their generosity, and the survivors who place their trust in SACE every day. Together, we have strengthened an organization that continues to make a profound difference in the lives of individuals, families, and communities.

The work of ending sexual violence is far from complete, but I remain hopeful. SACE enters this new chapter with strong leadership, a clear purpose, and a community of supporters committed to creating a future where everyone can live free from violence.

It has been an honour to serve as Board Chair and to witness firsthand the impact of this organization. I look forward to seeing SACE continue to grow, lead, and transform lives in the years ahead.

With gratitude,

Dr. Barb van Ingen

2026 Highlight:

Mika Friesen wins the CPA Distinguished Accomplishment Award

The Distinguished Accomplishment Award recognizes CPAs or supporters of the profession who have demonstrated a significant achievement within the last five years. Since joining as the first-ever CPA and Chief Financial Officer at SACE in 2022, Mika has led a comprehensive financial “clean-up”, implementing best practices across all operations while ensuring regulatory compliance. She implemented an accounts payable automation system, a human capital and payroll management platform, a donor relationship management system, and migrated to a financial institution that caters to the financial needs of SACE, reducing administrative burden agency-wide.

Mika’s tireless efforts have helped navigate post-pandemic recovery, a large office relocation, and a significant decrease in funding. Her strategic insight, integrity, and calm guidance have strengthened governance, enhanced financial oversight, increased staff financial engagement, and ensured the organization can continue delivering critical services. By choosing to dedicate her expertise to SACE, Mika directly supports survivors of sexual violence and some of the most vulnerable members of the community.
